Getting to know……..

Liz van Welie
From Olympic Dreams to Community Impact: The Journey of Liz van Welie

liz

Liz grew up down South in Alexandra and started competitive swimming at the age of 9.  Long hot summers were spent constantly in the swimming pool so competitive swimming just became a natural progression.  She moved to Dunedin when she was 16 with a dream of making it to the Olympics.  That dream was realized when she competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and then went on to win a silver medal at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

Liz van Welie Aquatics started up in 2011 in a small pool in Judea, then we moved to our Pyes Pa facility in 2017.  Influenced by a drive to provide children with the opportunity to learn to swim and to make children safer in the water, we are compelled to educate our community as to why swimming lessons right from a young age are important as well as to provide opportunities for young and old to achieve their goals.

Making a Splash: Swim Success Story

A big shoutout to Isaiah Potaka Ohlson.

“Isaiah was always attached to me in the water and lacked confidence… now after just one term in Glider 3 with the amazing Cassie, he can confidently float, hold his breath underwater, kick correctly, and is starting freestyle!

Isaiah’s confidence has skyrocketed, and we’re SO proud of his progress! Learning to swim truly is a gift for life.”

Baby Corner

Swimming isn’t just a fun activity for little ones — it plays a powerful role in their early development. At Liz van Welie Aquatics, we believe in starting strong from the very beginning, and here’s why baby swimming is such a valuable experience:

🧠 1. Boosts Brain Development

Swimming strengthens the connection between the brain and body through movement patterns that support balance, coordination, and cognitive growth.

🏃‍♂️ 2. Improves Physical Development

Water resistance helps babies build muscle, improve coordination, and reach key motor milestones faster than on land.

❤️ 3. Builds Water Confidence and Safety Skills

Early exposure to water builds comfort and lays the groundwork for future water safety and swimming skills.

👶 4. Supports Bonding and Emotional Development

Baby swim sessions promote strong parent-child connections through shared experiences, touch, and trust-building.

💤 5. Improves Sleep and Appetite

Swimming uses lots of energy — which can mean deeper sleep and better eating habits for your baby.

🤗 6. Encourages Social Interaction

Group classes help babies engage with others, building early social skills in a playful, low-pressure environment.

🌿 Magnesium Mineral Pools
Our pools are enriched with magnesium minerals, which are gentler on the skin and eyes than traditional chlorinated pools. They’re great for sensitive skin and leave you feeling refreshed after every swim.

🔥 Underfloor Heating & Climate Control
No more chilly toes! We keep our building cozy and warm all year round with underfloor heating and an air pressure-controlled environment. That means comfortable poolside temperatures, even during the colder terms.
